Nathan Vikatos, 45, has been charged with murder after stabbing a 3-year-old boy to death at a unit in Sydney.
Police were called to a unit on Washington Street in Riverwood around 4 p.m. Wednesday, where they found the child already dead.
Vikatos was found self-inflicted and is in stable condition in hospital.
He was formally arrested at the hospital on Friday and charged with murder.
Vikatos has a partner who helps the police.
Superintendent Sheridan Waldau said Wednesday that the attack on the child appeared to be a “horrifying” domestic violence-related incident.
“We attend 140,000[domestic violence]cases each year, and unfortunately some of them end in murder,” she said.
Domestic Violence Prevention Minister Jody Harrison said the child’s death was “shocking and tragic”.
She offered her condolences to family and friends.
“We’ve seen two horrifying examples of families affected by domestic violence this week,” she said during parliamentary question time.
Vikatos was denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday via audio and video link.
