Usman Khawaja Questions Best Opening Pair for Australia’s Test Team

Usman Khawaja expressed uncertainty regarding Steven Smith’s role as an opener for Australia in Tests, following David Warner’s retirement. Smith partnered Khawaja in the opening slot during their recent series against New Zealand, where Smith’s performance was underwhelming, scoring just 51 runs across four innings, including a duck.

With Australia gearing up to host India for a four-match Test series starting November 22, Khawaja acknowledged his enjoyment of batting alongside Smith but questioned if it’s the optimal opening combination. He emphasized the need for discussions on the team’s best batting order in the lead-up to the series.

Regarding potential changes in the team composition, Khawaja anticipated adjustments based on the venue and opposition but expected minimal alterations overall. Australia’s squad has remained stable in recent years, aside from Warner’s absence, with a settled top six and bowling lineup.

The series against India will commence at Optus Stadium, Burswood, on November 22 and conclude at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26.
