Suspension of Sydney Airport causes chaos across Australia

Flight cancellations due to strong crosswinds at Sydney airport disrupted travel across the United States for the second day in a row during the peak school holidays.

A plane out of Honolulu encountered “severe turbulence”, injuring several passengers, causing chaos at the airport and affecting thousands of travelers.

By Saturday afternoon, dozens of flights had been canceled at Sydney Airport due to 45km/h winds and staffing problems.

More than 100 flights were canceled on Friday, and chaos spread to airports across the country.

Sydney airport controller Australian Airlines said strong winds were likely to leave only one runway open late Saturday.

With thousands scrambling to find new flights on the first day of school holidays in New South Wales, an airport spokeswoman said concerned passengers should talk directly to the airline.

“Airlines are working hard to re-accommodate and depart passengers,” an airport statement said.

Several passengers were injured after a Hawaiian Airlines plane encountered turbulence while flying over the Pacific Ocean Friday night, the airline said.

Flight HA451 was hit by strong winds and “unexpectedly severe turbulence” about five hours into the flight.

“Four passengers and three flight attendants were initially treated by onboard doctors and crew after consulting with doctors on the ground,” Hawaiian Airlines said in a statement.

The Airbus A330, carrying 163 passengers and 12 crew members, landed “without incident” at Sydney Airport at 7:47 pm on Friday, the airline added.

“We conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft yesterday before boarding flight HA452, which departed Sydney at around 10:30pm local time and headed for Honolulu.”

New South Wales Ambulance paramedics examined 12 patients at the scene, three of whom were hospitalized with back pain and other injuries.

Two passengers were taken to St George’s Hospital and the other to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.
