Logie Awards 2023: Sonia Kruger wins Gold Logie, Tony Armstrong honoured with inaugural Bert Newton Award
Sonia Kruger has taken home the most prestigious award in Australian television, winning the 2023 Gold Logie in Sydney on Sunday.
Kruger, the Network Seven star who hosts The Voice, Dancing with the Stars and Big Brother, took the Gold Logie for the most popular personality in Australian television.
The 57-year-old beat other popular presenters including last year’s winner Hamish Blake, Julia Morris, Leigh Sales, Mark Coles Smith, Osher Günsberg and Shaun Micallef.
A visibly shocked Kruger honoured those who work on the three programs she presents.
“I cannot believe that. I have to compose myself,” Kruger said.
“I want to thank all the people who work on Dancing With The Stars, all the people who work on The Voice, all the people who work on Big Brother.”
Kruger hosted the red carpet section of the event with Dr Chris Brown, whom she mentioned during her acceptance speech.
“Chris and I were walking around and there is a mural and it says ‘hosting is not about what you do, it is about how you make other people feel’.
“And I thought, that is so true. And tonight you guys, all your support, you have made me feel so good.”
Tony Armstrong named most popular presenter
Tony Armstrong has won his second major Logie award in as many years, taking home the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter.
Armstrong became one of the talking points at last year’s ceremony when he won Most Popular New Talent.
He presents on ABC News Breakfast and the popular program, A Dog’s World with Tony Armstrong.
“Truly didn’t think this would happen,” he said.
Kitty Flanagan, creator of ABC program Fisk, won most popular actress, while Crazy Fun Park provided one of the upsets of the evening by beating Bluey for Most Outstanding Children’s Program.
Australian Story won Most Popular Current Affairs Program for the first time.
Host Leigh Sales dedicated the win to those who trust the program to tell their stories.
“Thank you very much also to the people who trust us to tell their stories, because without them we wouldn’t have a program and it takes a lot of guts to come on and show your vulnerability as a human being,” Sales said.
“And thank you very much to the team who produces Australian Story. I am just very lucky to now be the person who is a face of it but there is a very dedicated team who really cares a lot behind it and this award is for them.”
