Israel sends ground forces into Gaza Strip

If you’re just joining us, Israel has launched “the second stage of the war,” maring its most significant ground incursion into the besieged Gaza Strip since fighting began on October 7.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz have given a late-night televised address announcing the escalation, reiterating their promise to “destroy” Hamas.

Here are some of the key quotes during that press conference. It was the first time Netanyahu took questions from reporters since Hamas’ surprise attack:

On the war:

“This is the second stage of the war whose goals are clear – to destroy Hamas’ governing and military capabilities and to bring the hostages home.” – Netanyahu

On the failure of Israeli intelligence on October 7:

On the military:

“We moved to the next stage in the war.” – Gallant.

“Last evening, the ground shook in Gaza. We attacked above ground and underground. … The instructions to the forces are clear. The campaign will continue until further notice.”- Gallant.
