British striker Charlie Austin leaves Brisbane Roar
Charlie Austin is set to leave Brisbane Roar less than six months after joining the A-League club.
The former English Premier League striker is understood to have told his Roar teammates on Monday that he will likely return to the UK next week.
Family reasons are understood to be behind Austin’s decision to seek an early release from his two-year contract.
Roar chairman Chris Fong has ruled out leaving the 33-year-old former Southampton and QPR marksman.
“We are focused on strengthening our offensive line-up in the January window,” Fong said.
“I don’t know if Charlie is a part of it, but I understand the discussions are ongoing as it involves broader influences not specifically related to the club.
“Charlie is a stand-up guy and wherever he lands will be in the best interest of the club and Charlie.”
Austin, who could end the Roar with Brisbane’s Newcastle at Macdonald-Jones Stadium on Friday night, has scored four goals in 10 appearances in all of the Roar’s competitions.
Austin was one of the highly regarded offseason recruits in the competition and was the subject of an episode of the A-League All Access Series earlier this season.
