A man who was shot with a taser and a police bean bag during a three-hour siege in southeast Melbourne is critically ill in hospital.

Negotiations continued until nearly 8 p.m., when police attempted to enter the premises and were confronted by an agitated man armed with a knife.

Officers tased him multiple times, but they were ineffective, so he was shot with a bean bag round.

Police said the man became unresponsive shortly after his arrest.

He received first aid before being taken to hospital, but remains in critical condition.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said: “The incident is currently being investigated by Homicide Squad and Professional Standards Command has been notified according to standard procedures.”

No other people were injured in the incident, and no one else was on the premises at the time.
