New South Wales driver charged in police crash

A man accused of driving head-on into police in New South Wales has been charged with multiple charges.

Two police officers were hospitalized, one requiring hand surgery, after the crash at Figtree outside Wollongong early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred after the man attempted to retrace his steps over the double line in an attempt to avoid a roadside breath test.

Police said a search was then launched and as the patrol climbed the hill, it collided with a car traveling at high speed on the other side of the road.

The vehicle also crashed into a parked car before the driver got away and was later found on a nearby street and arrested.

A 46-year-old man from Cordau Heights faces seven counts, including dangerous driving causing serious injury, negligent driving and failure to stop after a crash.

Police said the man’s license was suspended for six months in October.

An investigation into the crash continues as police await the results of the mandated tests.
