World Health Organization Supports Use of AstraZeneca Vaccine for COVID-19

The World Health Organization recommends the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for COVID-19, but there are recent reports that have questioned its effectiveness.

The United Nations Health Organization released guidance on Wednesday, days after the publication of a study showing that the vaccine was less protective against the 501Y.V2 mutant of the first new coronavirus detected in South Africa.

WHO said the results of this study showed limited efficacy against mild COVID-19, but there was no evidence that the vaccine did not prevent severe disease.

Therefore, following the advice of an international committee of 26 vaccine experts, WHO recommended the use of AstraZeneca Shot “even if there are variants in the country”.

Kate O’Brien, WHO’s premier vaccination specialist, said all vaccines tend to be less effective against mild illnesses.
