When the fuel pump is completely spilled, the Queensland highway will be closed.

A full fuel pump at a gas station ruptured, spilling thousands of liters of gasoline, and closing the highway west of Brisbane.

Police closed the Brisbane Valley Highway by setting a 500m exclusion zone around the Ferndale gas station after the fuel pump began to leak at 10am on Sunday.

It is believed that the full fuel pump contains 8000 liters of gasoline.

“There are no fires and no injuries. Fuel will evaporate over several hours and the Brisbane Valley Highway near the incident will need to be closed,” a police statement said.

Gas stations have been evacuated and paramedics have closed nearby markets and pie shops.

Police began reopening the highway almost two hours after closing the area.

However, drivers are urged to avoid areas where delays of up to 7 hours are expected.
