The Joint Commission has heard that Australia should classify Hamas as a “whole” terrorist organization.

The head of Australia’s national espionage agency supported listing Hamas as a terrorist organization.

ASIO Executive Secretary Mike Burgess said the list for the entire Palestinian group was fine.

“Yes, I support it, but I’m not a decision maker,” Burgess told Congress on Friday.

“There is a difference between Hamas and those who consider themselves Palestinians. If they support Hamas, they will support terrorist organizations.”

Currently, Australia recognizes the group’s paramilitary organization only as a terrorist group.

However, Jonathan Shanzer, vice president of the pro-Israeli group known as the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the idea of ”wings” in Hamas was fiction.

Dr. Shanzer said the interior minister should list the entire Hamas under criminal law.

“We will not separate the Izz-Add brigade (paramilitary organization) from the wider organization,” he said on Friday.

“This is fiction. It is perpetuated by those who want to get involved with the elements of the terrorist group.

“Hamas’ entry should be listed as a terrorist group in Australia and around the world.”

Canada, the European Union, Israel, Japan and the United States have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization.

In order to be listed as a terrorist organization, the agency will need to appoint Hamas to the Home Office.

There is no broad group nomination in front of the department, but representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Interior have confirmed that they can nominate themselves to the committee.

Burgess said expanding the list to include the entire organization would not affect ASIO’s work and would not “show broader national security concerns.”

He said the Hamas brigade was rated as a threat to Israeli military and civilian targets.

“As a result, they continue to be a security concern for ASIO and we support the listing,” Burgess said.

“ASIO evaluated (the brigade) as a highly capable terrorist organization committed to using terrorist tactics in targeting Israel.”

Listing all Hamas as a terrorist organization would expose its supporters to anti-terrorism legislation. The committee was asked to consider whether it was al-Shabaab. Kurdistan Workers’ Party; Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Islamic Jihad in Palestine; Like the Hamas Ids al-Din Alkasam Brigade, it continues to be listed as a terrorist organization under criminal law.

This is the ninth time the Hamas Cassam Brigade has been relisted.
