The legal inquiry into the complaint was instigated by Michael Ducey, CEO of Legacy Club Services, the company that services Legacy Club Sydney, of which Hopwood is president.

Legacy Club Services employs approximately 45 staff, mostly women, who work with Legacy volunteers to provide care to veteran families.

The company serves several clubs, including Legacy Club Sydney, an autonomous volunteer organization with its own governing board presided over by Hopwood.

Hopwood shares an office with Legacy Club Services staff (who filed 16 complaints), but he doesn’t work for the company, and CEO Ducie has no authority over his appointment.

“We are in a very enviable position and in a difficult situation,” said Ducey, before Hopwood stepped aside.

“I am passionate about taking care of my staff and am frustrated at not being able to take stronger action.

On Wednesday, Sydney Legacy Trustees Secretary Dick Adams said: Former Assistant Chief of Policesaid the committee considered the findings against Hopwood, but still passed a motion in favor of him.

“At the Sydney Legacy Club Management Committee meeting held on 23 February 2023, the Committee, after careful consideration of the Legacy Club Services (LCS) Board decision on the Hopwood matter, voted unanimously. Resolution passed and support for the continued leadership of Legacy Hopwood’s Sydney Legacy,” Adams said. Herald in a statement.

A meeting of the board of trustees with the power to pass a resolution calling for Hopwood’s resignation, scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed.

“We are working to convene a club steering committee meeting as soon as it becomes available to all members to discuss current developments,” Adams said.

When Denton’s investigation into Hopwood was concluded, Hopwood returned to his York Street office, but was told that he would not be able to interact directly with staff.

Staff were told they could work from home if they felt “uncomfortable” working with Hopwood.

Hopwood has been actively involved in NSW Liberal Party politics, running for the Parramatta federal seat in 2022 and leading the campaign for current NSW Liberal Party Leader Maria Kovacic.

There is no indication that Kovacic had any knowledge of the complaints against Hopwood.

Legacy Australia, the national body that oversees the Legacy Club, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with the start of the torch relay in Pozières, France.

Legacy’s membership base is declining and we launched a recruitment campaign last year to get more volunteers.
