TGA Approves Three Rapid Antigen Tests for Australians to Use at Home

Australians can be tested for Covid-19 at home within a few weeks of being approved by a drug regulator.

Australians will be able to test for Covid-19 at home starting next month following a green light from drug regulators.

The Therapeutic Goods Department has approved three self-administered rapid antigen test kits that can be supplied nationwide from November 1.

Two tests require spitting into the tube and the third test is a nasal swab.

More home test kits are expected to be available until TGA approval.

The kit will be available in pharmacies and online to complement the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests performed in public clinics.

PCR tests are considered a “gold standard” because they give more accurate results, but they are time consuming because the test must be evaluated in the laboratory.

Rapid self-managed tests that can produce results within 20 minutes are already widely used in Europe and the United States.

Rapid antigen testing is already used in a variety of Australian workplaces, including in some medical settings, elderly care, and television production.

TGA boss John Skelitt said in September that tests designed for professional settings need to be transformed to make them suitable for home use.

“When many of these home tests were developed for Europe, the United States, and North America, there weren’t many deltas (variants), so it’s absolutely important to make sure they work well in deltas,” he said. I told the Senate. Covid Committee.

He said vaccination levels by the end of October or early November meant less impact of false-positive or false-negative results from rapid testing.

Professor Skelit said it was up to the state and territorial governments to decide whether to implement public health orders to require reporting of positive results.

At the time, Health Minister Greg Hunt said home testing was an important additional protection for Australians.
