Animal rights protesters in inflatable Tyrannosaurus Rex costumes descended on Flemington to demand an end to the horse races.
Perplexed onlookers watched as a group of dinosaurs with signs reading “Horse racing is prehistoric” gathered for a race on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) organized protests to encourage boycotts of the race.

CPR says 139 racehorses have died on Australian racetracks in the past year. Additionally, thousands of horses die each year from race-related injuries that die off the track or are killed for failing to make a profit.

PETA’s Emily Rice said, “The Melbourne Cup, and all other events that cause horses to suffer devastating injuries and even die in the name of greed, deserve to disappear.”

CPR campaign director Elio Celotto urged people to say “Nup to the Cup” this year.
