She made her name on the football pitch, and now Sam Kerr is set to add another string to her bow: a children’s writer.
The 27-year-old Matildas captain delved into her own history in her novel series, Kicking Goals, based on her journey to leave AFL as a young girl because she didn’t have a team of girls to join.
She discovered football with the support of her family. As they say, the rest is history.
In the first book, The Flip Out, a young reader “learns all the rules and positions of this new game and discovers how hard it was to play with a new team … but soon it feels more and more. It’s natural for Sam to get started, and before she realized she fell in love with football. “
This book and series covers the universal themes of family, friendship, teamwork, personal challenges (on and off the pitch), overcoming obstacles, dealing with bullies, and patience.
Last year, soccer superstars signed a six-book deal with Australia’s Simon & Schuster.
The series is typically published for middle-grade readers aged 8-12, with the first two books expected to be released by the end of the year. The first will be released on September 1st.
Carr will play for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics later this month and will be the face of the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
“Nothing makes me happier than being recognized as a role model for young Australian children,” Kerr said when the deal was announced.
“Through these books, I want to share some of my personal stories of growing, pushing the boundaries, and chasing my dreams. I’m waiting to take the reader on this journey. I can’t cut it.
Carr began playing Perth Glory at the age of 15 and played in Matildas at the Brazilian Olympics in 2016, scoring the highest score in the 2017 Tournament of Nations.
Since joining Chelsea in 2019, Carr has positioned himself as one of the best female strikers in the world and was named the 2018 Young Australian of the Year.
The second book in her series, A New Knight, will be published in December.
