A child died after being hit by a car at a Sydney facility on Christmas Eve.

Emergency services were called to Dural, north-west Sydney, around 6pm on Saturday and found a 2-year-old boy with serious injuries.

Paramedics treated the boy, but he died at the scene.

Police have taken a 38-year-old man for compulsory inspection and he is helping them with their investigation.

People are being asked to drive safely over Christmas weekend after three fatalities occurred in New South Wales on Friday.

Police are running a road safety program that includes double deductions until after New Year’s Day.

Two police officers were taken to hospital early Sunday morning when their car was destroyed in a fire after colliding with a traffic light in western Sydney.

Police said the marked car entered the Orchard Hills M4 exit ramp and crashed while the two were responding to a report of a stolen car in the Penrith area.

Two male constables were able to free themselves when the vehicle was dismounted.

They were taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
