The Australian Government has made some surprising comments on the new variant of the coronavirus and provided the UK with some very different advice.
The UK Health Security Agency has expressed serious concern about a new strain known as B11529, which is believed to be endemic in many South African states.
The agency believes that the new variant has twice the amount of mutation as the delta variant.
On Thursday, UK Health Minister Sajid Javid announced that Britain would close its borders to six African countries and put them on the Red List for travel.
“Our scientists are deeply concerned about this variant,” Javid said.
“The early signs we have about this mutant may be that it is more contagious than the delta mutant, and the vaccines we currently have may be less effective against it. about it.”
But when Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt spoke with the press on Friday, he gave a very different view of the new variety.
Hunt said Australia would not change border rules at this stage, arguing that the new variant is unlikely to reduce the effectiveness of the Covid vaccine.
“It’s very unlikely that it will affect the effectiveness of the vaccine,” he said.
“This is a very different situation from the emergence of Delta and the high number of cases seen in India. We are very highly vaccinated.
“There is no basis for change.”
The Prime Minister expressed similar feelings to Mr. Hunt, urging Australians not to panic about the new variety yet.
“We recommend that this is under investigation and not a variant of concern,” Scott Morrison said on Friday.
Currently, the only flight from South Africa to Australia is the government’s return flight through Howard Springs in the Northern Territory. That is, all arrivals must be quarantined.
The World Health Organization will meet today to discuss whether to declare B11529 a major new variant.
If the variant is considered very dangerous, it will be given the Greek alphabetical name “Nu”.
Hunt said Australia is ready to act if ATAGI assesses that the level of risk posed by the new variant has changed.
“We are well prepared and with (new) advice we can act quickly,” he said.
“The advice at this point is to engage with the international community.
“We have double vaccinated Australian returnees and other stakeholders subject to current border restrictions, and there are no changes at this time.”
Scott Morrison states that the new variant is “not a problem” because the UK slum border is closed.
