New South Wales police charge son with murder of elderly mother

A man has been charged with murdering his elderly mother after her body was found in her home in western Sydney.

New South Wales Police were summoned to a Greendale facility near Liverpool around 9:30 am on Friday after a woman believed to be in her 70s was found inside.

Her son was arrested early Saturday morning at a service station in West Ballina in the Northern Rivers region, more than seven hours’ drive from Sydney.

The 41-year-old man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for evaluation under police security before being transferred to the mental health unit.

He was later charged with violating an assault order for murder and arrested after an investigation by Liverpool and Homicide Squad detectives.

The man was refused to appear in Lismore District Court on Sunday.

The woman’s identity has not been formally disclosed.
