After four laps, Verstappen pitted in, changed tires and red flagged the race to repair the barrier so that he could resume the race at the top.
At the restart, Hamilton regained the lead, but claimed to have been taken off course by Verstappen.
After a while, another red flag came out as Sergio Perez, George Russell and Nikita Mazepin collided behind the field.
Steward decided that Verstappen’s operation was illegal and promoted Alpine’s Esteban Ocon to Paul at the third start of the race, with Hamilton in second and Verstappen in third.
Surprisingly, Verstappen took the lead again and Hamilton followed through.
But when they clashed in the second half of the race, the drama and controversy continued. Hamilton said he was undergoing a brake test and Verstappen was punished by Steward before the Britons passed by and won.
