A magnitude 3.1 earthquake hits the Appin area in the southwestern suburbs of Sydney

A small earthquake struck the Appin region, about 75 kilometers southwest of Sydney.

The 3.1-magnitude tremor occurred at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, just north of Douglas Park, about 3 kilometers below the earth’s crust.

Hadi Ghasemi, senior seismologist at the Australian Institute of Geosciences, described it as a shallow earthquake.

“We normally think of this as a small earthquake,” said Ghasemi.

“For those close to the epicenter, it would have felt like a short, sharp movement followed by a few more movements…it passed very quickly.”

He said it was unlikely the incident caused damage to buildings or other structures.

In comments on Facebook, local residents reported feeling their homes shaking.

So far, no aftershocks have been recorded.

Ghasemi said at least 48 similar quakes have occurred within a 100-kilometer radius of the epicenter over the past decade.

“All the events we registered for were small and shallow,” he said.
