Mining giant charged with harassing documents

Fortescue Metals Group has been charged in Western Australia for failing to file dozens of allegations of sexual harassment at mine sites.

Mining giants have been charged with 34 counts of refusing or failing to comply with the requirement to submit documents to WorkSafe inspectors within specified time periods without a reasonable excuse.

The documents concern allegations of sexual harassment at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek, Solomons and Cloudbreak mining operations, WorkSafe said Wednesday.

Inspectors have the right under Washington state law to require documentation within a specified period unless there is a valid reason, the regulator said.

The case is scheduled to be referred to the Perth Magistrate’s Court on March 17, and Fortescue has not yet filed an indictment.

“Since the case is now in the hands of the court, no further information will be provided at this stage,” WorkSafe said in a statement.

Fortescue has been reached for comment.

A congressional survey last year found Washington state’s multi-billion dollar mining industry had failed to protect its female workers from predatory behavior, including targeted violence, stalking, grooming and threats to livelihoods. .
