Piercing bird inline to replace sick Norris

Very ill Lando Norris has been diagnosed with tonsillitis, and only a few days later Monaco and Oscar Piastri of Australia may be asked for a British sub-in.

McLaren doesn’t have a specific reserve driver, but earlier this year we added Alpine Reserve Driver Piastri to the list of potential stand-ins.

Mercedes Reserve drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries, as well as former Force India driver Paul di Resta are on the list.

Norris was ill all weekend, initially suffering from hay fever and then having an allergic reaction. The McLaren driver had a negative test against COVID-19.

His condition continued to deteriorate and after the race he was found to be suffering from tonsillitis.

Norris was forced to miss a regular post-race media session in Barcelona to get a medical examination.

With a true gritty drive, Norris came from outside the top 10 and finished the race in 8th place. It describes it as one of the toughest races of his career on social media.

“It was hard today,” Norris said. “I was really sick before the race because I was suffering from tonsillitis. Combined with the high temperatures, it was one of the most difficult races I’ve ever had.

“I was a little hind this weekend as most of my energy was spent fighting this illness.

“I had to miss a lot of engineering sessions that endangered the weekend, and I was definitely not ready for the Grand Prix as much as I could.

“With that in mind, I’m really happy to get out of the race at a decent point for the team.”

Even before the race began, Norris looked ugly, but survived the intense heat of 37 degrees and scored an impressive four points.

His Australian teammate Daniel Ricciardo started in 9th place, but dropped down and finished in 12th position.

With just four days on the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, McLaren hopes Norris will recover quickly and completely for the toughest street race of the season.

Otherwise, active FIA Formula 2 Champion Piastri may be required to make his Formula 1 debut in the Principality of Monaco.
