Two buildings collapse in French city

Two buildings collapsed on a busy street in central Lille, northern France.

Investigation and rescue operations are underway, according to the fire department.

So far, no victims have been found.

The collapse occurred at 9:15 am on Saturday in a street where tourists shop all day, especially on weekends.

According to La Voix du Nord, one of the two adjoining buildings was undergoing renovations, not far from the historic main square.

One of the buildings had already been evacuated overnight after a person who arrived late at night noticed cracks in the foundation, the newspaper said.

After the collapse, the area was widely cordoned off and the adjacent hotel was evacuated.

A total of 48 official vehicles arrived and rescue workers were deployed to the area with search dogs.
