New South Wales police arrest man with broken jaw after being attacked by Sydney football referee

A man was arrested on suspicion of attacking a soccer referee and broke his jaw.

An alleged altercation between a male spectator and a referee at the end of a football match at Padstow Park in southwest Sydney around 10:30pm on Friday was captured and shared online.

New South Wales police say a man assaulted the 45-year-old referee with “several punches in the face and kicks in the head”.

The attacker allegedly fled the scene when spectators intervened for help.

NSW Police confirmed on Sunday that they had arrested a 25-year-old man who was “aiding an investigation”.

No charges have been made at this stage.

Meanwhile, the referee was taken to Liverpool hospital with a broken jaw.

according to Daily Telegraph, Referee Khodr Yaghi will undergo surgery to reconstruct his jaw on Monday.

His wife told Masthead that the veteran referee was in intensive care and had just stopped bleeding as of Sunday morning.
