Peter Dutton was ridiculed as the “Minister of Culture War” with the exception of Morning Tea, whose staff were dressed in rainbow colors to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
Friday Defense Minister Told the Sydney Morning Herald He ordered Defense Commander Angus Campbell to “stop” by issuing a department-wide memo ordering event, such as “Morning Tea, where staff are encouraged to wear certain clothes.”
Dutton’s intervention has been ridiculed by public sector unions.
“If drinking morning tea for Reconciliation Week, International Women’s Day, or International Day against homophobia has stopped our national security efforts, we have a real problem.” Brooke Muscat, Vice President of the Community and Public Sector Union, said. “It’s written everywhere by Peter Dutton, the Federal Minister of Culture War.”
The directive followed Monday’s event to commemorate International Day for homophobia, biphobia, interphobia and transphobia.
A memo sent earlier this year encouraged defense staff to mark the day with morning tea and wear visible rainbow-colored clothing and ally pins. The goal was to show “support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) colleagues, friends and family” and “to combat prejudice and discrimination and show inclusion”.
“As this circulation points out, public services serve the community, so we need to reflect what the community looks like,” says Muscat.
“Diversity strengthens us, and celebrating our diversity encourages a safer and more respectful workplace.
Dutton, who took over the defense portfolio in March, told Herald that he had ordered Campbell to send notes to defense staff to stop “these awakened agendas.”
This direction tells staff that defense “represents the people of Australia” and that “we must always focus on our main mission of protecting Australia’s national security interests.” It reminded me.
“Don’t focus on anything that gets in the way.”
The Guardian contacted Dutton’s office for comment.
