Life will be a little easier for newly arrived Afghan refugees who have been warmly welcomed by the Newcastle community thanks to their generous donations. The family is now ready to buy food and clothing with cards that can be used at most supermarkets and retail chains, with an effort initiated by the United Church of Adamstown. Afghan refugee and former coach of the Afghan women’s soccer team, Khorsand Yousofzai, said he was looking forward to using the gift certificate. “Thanks to the Newcastle community for their generous donations,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to buying the coveted necessities and starting a new life here in Australia,” said Helen Larkin, Regional Coordinator for the International Humanitarian Settlement Program for Settlement Services in Newcastle and Hunter. The donation said it met the critical needs of newly arrived Afghan refugees. “The warm welcome of the community and gift certificates have met our urgent needs,” she said. “We are currently focused on helping Afghan arrivals advance their settlement journeys and extend the scope to include other refugee cohorts.” Northern Settlement Services CEO Sharon Daiche said future donations, with the support of both the NSS and SSI, will be directed towards broader goals. “We will focus on long-term outcomes such as access to education, increased digital literacy, programs for women and girls, sports, swimming, welfare programs and opportunities for social connectivity.” News: Our journalists are working hard to bring the latest local news to the community.
