Net Zero 2050: Angus Taylor says energy prices plummet with sunlight

The federal government has unveiled a bold goal for energy costs by 2050. It says it saves Australians thousands of dollars.

Energy Minister Angus Taylor said electricity prices could be a fraction of current prices under the federal government’s new zero-emission program in 2050.

According to Taylor, the new plan could cost just $ 15 per megawatt hour to power a home using solar energy.

According to a BloombergNEF study, the average cost of solar power is currently around $ 62 per megawatt hour.

This is much cheaper than gas, which averages $ 108 per megawatt hour.

But Taylor said the government’s new net-zero target would further widen this price gap.

“This year, we’ve added the technical goal of ultra-low cost solar power for less than $ 15 per megawatt hour,” he said.

“This is a technology that Australia has played a leading role in for many years, and (and) we can continue into the future.

“By applying these technologies to different sectors, we can see how customers can choose these technologies and reduce their emissions.”

Taylor said Australians would be on average nearly $ 2,000 cheaper in 2050 under the new Net Zero program than if they took no action against climate change.

The government claims that the new Net Zero program will also create 62,000 new regional mining and heavy industry jobs to ensure that the 2050 target does not adversely affect the Australian region.

Taylor also said the new plan would not incur additional costs for taxpayers.

“There are no taxes or statutory goals or mechanisms,” he said.

“We are not going to raise the price of electricity. Indeed, these new technologies are putting downward pressure on prices.”
