Nestlé shifts to a renewable food system

Nestlé has announced plans to move to a renewable food system to protect and restore the environment, improve the livelihoods of farmers and improve the well-being of agricultural communities.

Nestlé will work with food system partners, including its network of more than 500,000 farmers and 150,000 suppliers, to promote regenerative agriculture practices in food systems. The company will also launch a new program to help address the social and economic challenges of the transition.

Nestlé leverages a vast network of R & D experts and agronomists to develop high-yielding coffee and cocoa varieties with low environmental impact and reduce emissions in the dairy supply chain.   • Providing investment support: The transition to regenerative agriculture comes with initial risks and new costs. Nestlé assists farmers by co-investing with them, promoting financing, or helping them obtain loans for specific equipment. The company will also work with partners to fund pilot projects to test and learn the best ways to advance regenerative agriculture.
  • Pay insurance premiums for recycled produce: Nestlé offers premiums for many raw materials produced using regenerative farming practices and buys more. This means rewarding farmers not only for the quantity and quality of raw materials, but also for the benefits they bring to the environment through soil protection, water management and carbon sequestration.

Nestlé announces the most important regenerative agriculture practices it wants to promote, including biodiversity improvement, soil conservation, water cycle regeneration and livestock integration.

Agriculture accounts for about two-thirds of Nestlé’s total greenhouse gas emissions, and dairy and livestock account for about half. For dairy products, Nestlé evaluates science and technology to reduce emissions at the farm level. The company works with 30 reference dairy farms in 12 countries to test scalable, climate-friendly regenerative agriculture practices that help achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Nestlé is also working with farmers to select and grow delicious, nutritious pulse varieties to use as a milk substitute.
