Countries rush to evacuate foreigners from Sudan

Conflicts between the Sudanese military and a militia called the Rapid Relief Force (RSF) have prompted the rescue of foreign diplomats and civilians.

Several countries evacuated their citizens by air, while others via Port Sudan on the Red Sea, about 800 kilometers by land from Khartoum.

This is the status of efforts in several countries.

Egypt

Egypt has evacuated a total of 6,399 Egyptians, of whom 1,072 were evacuated on Friday. About 16,000 people, including 14,000 Sudanese citizens, have crossed to Egypt from Sudan, Egypt’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Germany

As of Tuesday morning, the German evacuation mission had brought to safety a total of 500 people from more than 30 countries, including not only Germans but also Belgian, British, Dutch, Jordanian and American citizens. Berlin said its flights will end on Tuesday.

France

A total of 936 people have been evacuated from Sudan so far, the French government said on Thursday. The foreign ministry said those displaced included not only French nationals, but also British, Americans, Canadians, Ethiopians, Dutch, Italians and Swedes.

The UN secretary-general thanked France for its “important assistance” in transporting 400 UN personnel and their families from Sudan. The UK said it began a “massive” evacuation of its population on Tuesday, prioritizing families with children, the elderly and the infirm.

As of 1500 GMT on Thursday, 897 people had been evacuated on eight UK flights, with more scheduled.

The government estimated there were about 4,000 Britons in Sudan. Evacuated diplomats and their families on Saturday.

Russia

Russia has yet to announce the evacuation of embassies and citizens from Khartoum. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russians in Sudan are in close contact with Moscow.

Japan

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said all Japanese who wanted to leave the country had evacuated.

Switzerland

Switzerland has closed its embassy and evacuated all Swiss staff and their families.

China

China said most of its citizens were safely evacuated in groups to neighboring countries. The Defense Department deployed warships Wednesday to pick up and evacuate civilians.

According to the foreign ministry, between Tuesday and Thursday, about 800 people were deported by sea and more than 300 by land to neighboring countries. No casualties have been reported so far, the ministry said.

The Chinese Consulate General in Jeddah on Wednesday issued a notice advising citizens planning to flee to Saudi Arabia to enter through the Islamic port of Jeddah.

India

More than 1,200 Indians displaced from Sudan arrived in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah as of Thursday and will be repatriated to India soon, said the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister V Muraleedharan.

Indonesia

Almost 400 of the 900 Indonesians who fled Sudan returned to Indonesia on Friday morning, the foreign ministry said.

Canada

Canada conducted its first evacuation operation in Sudan on Thursday, airlifting more than 100 people, including Canadians and other nationals, from the war-torn North African country on two flights, a senior government official said.

Canada’s Defense Minister Anita Anand said Wednesday it would deploy about 200 troops to coordinate the evacuation of war-torn Sudan. About 180 Canadians had already been displaced with the help of other countries.

According to the Canadian government, there are about 1,800 Canadians in Sudan, 700 of whom are seeking help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ukraine

Ukraine said it rescued 87 civilians out of a total of 138 civilians, including those from Georgia and Peru. Most of them are pilots, aircraft engineers and their families.

Kenya

Kenya’s foreign ministry said Thursday that the government had evacuated 342 people who had arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from Port Sudan.

South Africa

South Africa said it expected the last 12 nationals known to be in Sudan to leave on Tuesday.

Iran

Iran’s foreign ministry said on Saturday that 65 Iranian citizens had left Port Sudan via Jeddah for Iran.
