Mountain Distilling brews first whiskey and wins gold medal at IWSC

Mountain Distilling, a distillery in Mount Macedon, Victoria, won the gold medal at the 2021 International. The first whiskey, the Red Gum Single Malt Whiskey Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).

The award-winning Mountain Gin and Mountain Gin Tonic, best known for Mountain Distillation, scored 95 points in the IWSC Worldwide Whiskey category. This ranks it higher than products made by other brands focused on Australian whiskey, such as Starward and Lark Distillery.

“This is absolutely amazing that our first whiskey was co-winned with Australia’s highest scoring whiskey,” said Michael Harris, co-founder of Mountain Distilling.

Red Gum Single Malt Whiskey is made from 100% malt barley and is the first product to use Australian red gum as the only wood ingredient exclusively from start to finish of the aging process. This created a unique Australian flavor profile.

An IWSC judge said the profile of the Red Gum Single Malt was “a spicy herb smoked nose with a scent of caramel, burnt wood and hedges.” Pete penetrates the palate well, balancing the flavors of prunes, Christmas spices and pears, and brightening with a citrus aroma. “

“The unique taste of Macedon Ranges and Red Gum is very appealing,” Harris said.

“Everyone who sampled it gave us great feedback, but this award exceeded our expectations.

“Our red gum single malt truly represents the spirit of our distillery here in the Macedon Mountains.”

Launched in 2017, Mountain Distilling focuses primarily on specialty mountain gin inspired by locally sourced plants and ingredients.

Mountain Gin has won two awards in the IWSC 2021, gold and 95 points in the Contemporary Gin category, and gold in the Gin & Tonic category. Mountain Distilling’s Oblivion Gin, co-created with British electronic producer Lapalux, also scored 91 points with silver.

Mountain Distilling’s long-awaited Red Gum single malt will be available as a brand’s exclusive pre-order website Until official release in November 2021.
