MCLAUGHLIN and POWER ON TOP IN IOWA TEST

Dan McCarthy

Although he had never raced at the Iowa Speedway, Scott McLaughlin beat the test with a time of 18.537 seconds and 0.015 seconds ahead of his Australian teammate Willpower.

The short 1.4km was off the 2021 calendar in 2021, but will host the doubleheader on July 23rd and 24th next month.

It was a great day for Penske, with all three cars in the top five. After being disappointed, the Indy 500 can once again find an oval pace.

McLaughlin was the fastest from power, but two-time champion New Garden was fifth, just 0.18 seconds behind McLaughlin’s time.

The Team Penske trio also completed the most laps. Over 200 drivers were the McLaughlin Set 220, a staggering 282 power, the New Garden 211, and the next best driver was the Dalton Kelett 180.

Former Indy 500 winner and former F1 driver Takuma Sato was the best non-Team Penske machine to finish the day in 3rd place.

Former Formula 2 front runner Christian Runguard was impressive. McLaughlin has never raced at the venue and finished fourth ahead of the three-time race winner New Garden in Iowa.

Indy 500 runner-up Aroma McLaren SP driver Pato O’Ward finished the day in 6th place with the fastest time of 18.819 seconds.

Indy 500 winner and championship leader Marcus Ericsson finished seventh in 179 laps.

Graham Rahal completed the test with fewer laps than anyone else, only 57 laps, but was still enough to set the eighth fastest time.

Two veterans conclude the top ten with 18.879, Elio Castroneves and Scott Dixon.

Jack Harvey and David Marcus noticed that they were just outside the top ten.

Jimmie Johnson, a former NASCAR star who quickly established himself as an IndyCar oval specialist, finished the day at the age of 13.th Prior to current champion Alex Palou.

Two AJ Foyt racing machines, Simon Pagenaud, Callum Ilott, Felix Rosenqvist, and Kyle Kirkwood and Keret, closed the field. The field of 19 cars expanded in just 1.03 seconds.

Andretti Autosport in particular did not participate in the test. Instead, four drivers Alexander Rossi, Romain Grosjean, Colton Herta and Devlin DeFrancesco will be testing at the Indianapolis Road Course this Thursday.

Andretti takes data from today’s tests as it has a strong technical partnership with Meyer Shank Racing and its drivers Castroneves and Pagenaud.

In addition to Andretti Quartet, former Supercars Championship driver Simona de Sylvestro will take part in the indie road course tests as well as McLaren’s O’Ward and Rosenqvist and AJ Foyt’s Kirkwood.

The indie road course race will take place a week after the Iowa doubleheader at the end of next month.

The next IndyCar Series race will take place on July 3rd at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
