On Wednesday, a woman allegedly stabbed by a male colleague at a popular Newcastle cafe was rushed to the hospital.
A 23-year-old man was arrested near the scene in Mayfield at about 2:35 pm and charged with attempted murder and injury aimed at causing serious physical harm.
Police told reporters when they arrived at the Onyx Cafe on Mayfield Road that police found a woman with a knife still “embedded in her chest.”
Her alleged attackers, a man from Sandgate and a 27-year-old woman, were colleagues at the cafe.
Investigator Wayne Humphrey told Newcastle media after the incident that an attack had begun in the kitchen using a “blunt instrument.”
“It went on and the woman suffered a puncture wound in her chest,” he claimed.
“The knife was embedded in her chest and remained in her chest when the paramedics arrived.”
The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The man has been denied bail and will face the Newcastle District Court on Thursday.
Onyx Cafe visited Facebook after the incident and informed the customer that it was closed until further notice.
The customer sent a wish to the staff in the comments to the post.
“A sad day like this for you … when you’re ready to come back, we’ll be back … stay safe … love for all our staff and family,” writes one.
Another said he stopped by for coffee just 10 minutes before the incident unfolded.
“Send thoughts and prayers to (women) and anyone who has witnessed a truly horrifying event,” they wrote.
