Teenager dies, five others injured after ute crashes into tree in Sydney’s northern beaches

A teenage boy has died after a ute crashed into a tree on Sydney’s northern beaches overnight.

The vehicle was carrying six boys, all aged between 16 and 17, when it left the road and hit a tree in Bayview early on Saturday morning.

All six teenagers were injured and taken to various hospitals across Sydney.

A 16-year-old boy who was travelling in the front passenger seat of the dual cab Toyota Hilux ute died from his injuries.

Northern Beaches Police Commander Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said the crash site was “traumatic” when emergency services arrived just after midnight.

“It was a very chaotic scene with six people injured … it appeared that perhaps two of the occupants had been ejected from the vehicle,” Superintendent Sharkey said.

“The range of injuries to the persons ranged between serious crush injuries to the chest and leg fractures and other injuries.”

Four other boys, who were sitting in the back seat, remain in hospital at Royal North Shore.

The driver of the ute — a 17-year-old red P-plater — was airlifted to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he is in a critical but stable condition. He is yet to be interviewed by officers.

Police say there were only five seatbelts in the ute.

“Where those persons were positioned — whether they were all in the cabin or elsewhere — that is yet to be determined,” Superintendent Sharkey said.

The six boys were believed to be friends who all lived around the northern beaches.

Police are yet to establish where the boys were coming from, or if they had stopped anywhere prior to the incident.

“They’re all friends, which certainly makes more difficult for the families,” Superintendent Sharkey said.

“It’s a very traumatic situation for all parties involved.”

Whether drugs, road condition, alcohol or speeding was a factor in the crash will be investigated, according to police.

Anyone with information about the incident or dashcam footage of the area around Cabbage Tree Road in Bayview is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
