Australia is an ‘important partner’ in NATO’s plans for Taiwan, says Jens Stoltenberg

One Western official said that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression was the impetus to accelerate the allies’ plans, rather than distract them from the Chinese threat.

“For many years NATO did not mention China because we focused on the Soviet Union and later on the fight against terrorism,” Stoltenberg said. A turning point came in Europe in 2019 On whether to follow Australia’s lead in banning Huawei from 5G networks, even as the Chinese telecoms vendor continues to maintain a large market share in Europe.

“But our allies were also aware of what was happening in Asia and that China was important to our security, so we have come a long way. It’s great to see how they are united and working together, and of course an important and very important partner for NATO,” he said.

Putin complained US forms global NATO through ‘axis’ including Australia and other Indo-Pacific countries. Stoltenberg said the strengthened partnership was a natural consequence of Russia’s own misconduct in aggression against Ukraine.

“Beijing is watching closely the war in Ukraine, the price Putin is paying and the potential rewards he can achieve,” he said.

“This shows that our security is linked.

“Dictatorships are getting closer and closer, as China and Russia are. is to be.”

Asked what NATO’s response would be if China used force to occupy Taiwan, as threatened by President Xi Jinping, Stoltenberg said that would be Article 5 NATO allies will respond, he said.

“Of course, we don’t call for Article 5, but it affects us, so we also need to be prepared to deal with the crisis in and around Taiwan,” he said.

“Allies, especially the United States, are assessing potential consequences and potential ways of responding.”

He said the priority was to deter and prevent the onset of conflict, but if this was not achieved, NATO would remain adamant.

“It is even more important that we stand together and support each other should anything happen. This has serious implications for our economy, for trade and, of course, for our safety It’s from.”
