Former F1 driver and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nico Hulkenberg has completed an IndyCar test at the McLaren Arrow SP.
The Germans participated in a driver evaluation session with the Barber Motorsports Park team and grabbed the steering wheel of Felix Rosenqvist’s # 7 car.
A 34-year-old F1 veteran completed more than 100 laps on a 3.83km circuit throughout the day.
Hülkenberg wasn’t the only driver to take action, he shared the Termac with former IndyCar Series winners and Indy500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, who lapped on the Ed Carpenter Racing Machine.
Three Indy Lights drivers were also tested, with Kyle Kirkwood and Devlin DeFrancesco driving the # 26 and # 29 Andretti Autosports cars, and David Marcus on the # 18 Dale Coyne Racing machine.
Marcus not only recorded the most laps on 136 laps, but was also the fastest driver of the day, completing the circuit at 1’06.398.
American veteran Hunter-Reay finished second, just 0.3 seconds behind, with Andretti Autosport’s two men, De Franceso, in third and Kirkwood in fourth.
Despite Hülkenberg’s fastest time 1.057 seconds slower than Marcus, it was a positive day and he completed the second most lap at 108.
Both McLaren Arrow SP seats will be used in the 2022 IndyCar season and both Pato O’Ward and Rosenqvist will be retained in the next season.
However, McLaren Racing Team Principal Zak Brown told Laguna Seca’s IndyCar Reporter that the team would “certainly” expand to three full-time cars in 2023. In ’22. “
O’Ward of Mexico finished 4th and 3rd respectively in the last two IndyCar seasons, and Rosenqvist is the winner of the IndyCar race.
The 179th Grand Prix Starter has been a candidate for this seat since 2022.
If he wins the drive, Halkenberg will join fellow former F1 drivers Romain Grosjean, Marcus Ericsson and Alexander Rossi on the grid.
Hülkenberg won the Formula BMW Championship in 2005 and the 2006-07 A1 Grand Prix Series and Formula 3 Euro Series in 2008.
His momentum continued when he won the second tier GP2 series in his debut season. This is only one of the five drivers who have achieved this feat.
Only Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Charles Leclerc and George Russell are there.
