Japanese car giant Honda has left F1 as a team to more closely adhere to its carbon-neutral promotion.
Nonetheless, the technology is still fully used and Red Bull’s badged engine dominates the current F1 landscape with seven of the 11 GP wins this season.
Being part of Red Bull and AlphaTauri means it’s important for them to maintain their presence even if they decide to re-enter the ring.
Internally, there is still hope that it will come back someday due to future regulatory changes, but the competition will reflect its environmental standards.
F1 Body continues to work on its own Net Zero target for 2030, which is assigned to the revision of the engine system in 2026 and is 100% sustainable.
At the Austrian Grand Prix, many Honda officials who played an important role in the final F1 race attended the track. CEO Toshihiro Mibe, HRC President Koji Watanabe, and director Yasuzou Asagi watched Ferrari win the Red Bull engine.
“I don’t know the exact time frame,” Watanabe said.
“But if you want to return to F1 in 2026, you probably have to make a decision within the next year to a year and a half.
“It’s not a closed door. In my understanding, F1 is talking to determine the 2026 regulation and definitely the direction is carbon neutral. It’s the same direction as us. F1 carbon neutral. It’s not a closed room because it’s also a good opportunity to study. “
Honda’s enthusiastic efforts to make road cars compliant with carbon-neutral values remain a top priority, but F1’s pride and long-standing involvement will continue forever.
“Formula 1 is a top category in motorsport, so we’re always watching what’s happening in the F1 world,” Watanabe tweeted.
Honda first entered F1 in 1964 and quit sports in 2021 with an impressive CV. This includes 6 Constructors’Champions, 6 Drivers’ Championships, 89 race wins and 223 podiums.
