Daniel Ricciardo’s preparations for the Russian Grand Prix were hampered by the poor performance of the Mercedes-powered McLaren, which required the engine to be replaced between practice sessions.
The Italian GP winner suffered from a lack of power in FP1 and was able to set the 14th fastest time.
After Missing the start of FP2 while McLaren had completed the switch, Ricardo was able to get going, but the rest of the field could complete heavy fuel runs and set a typical lap time. I caught up with the traffic while I couldn’t.
“This morning we had a lot of trouble getting comfortable, but not so fast,” said the Australian.
“I made some changes by replacing the PU with the FP2, but then I was late to leave, the yellow, red flags, and the people around me were high fuel.”
“I have some homework tonight because it was a really lost session. Fortunately, Rand looked more comfortable and faster in FP2, so I’ll learn from it.”
“It’s not the most exciting day for us, but there’s a lot we can do to improve ahead of qualifying.”
Andrea Stella, Executive Secretary of McLaren, has confirmed Ricardo’s problem and is confident that qualifying will improve.
“On the Daniel side of the garage, I found a problem at the end of FP1 and was a bit confused,” Stel said.
“I swapped PUs during the break between P1 and P2 and lost a bit of execution time. As a result, I was running a new software run on P2 in difficult traffic conditions.”
“It’s reflected in the classification, but we know there’s more to come.”
In the F1 qualifying, which starts at 9:30 pm (AEST) tonight, it is expected that rain will be mixed in Sochi.
