Empowering Students with Disabilities by Investing in Education – SchoolNews – Australia

New data from the Australian Education Union show that public schools do not have the resources needed to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the AEU urges the federal government to address the apparent inequities in funding students in public schools with disabilities.

An AEU 2021 State of our Schools survey of public school teachers, principals, and educational support staff found that:

  • Eighty-three percent of all principals say they do not have sufficient resources to adequately meet the needs of students with disabilities at school.
  • 89% of principals use funds from other budget areas to fill the funding shortfalls of students with disabilities.
  • 64% of principals say that students with disabilities or learning disabilities benefit 100% of the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS) by funding the school.
  • Eighty-seven percent of principals say teachers will benefit most from additional classroom support when teaching students with disabilities or learning disabilities at 100% of SRS.

“9 out of 10 principals surveyed told us that they ensure that students with disabilities in school receive the necessary educational support with the funds needed for other purposes.” Said Correna Haythorpe, President of the AEU.

“The situation is particularly urgent in very remote schools, with 95% of teachers reporting that the needs of students with disabilities in schools are not adequately met.

“This data underscores the important need to ensure that public schools are funded at least 100 percent of their educational resource standards.

“Every student, regardless of circumstances, is worth access to educational opportunities that enable them to fully utilize their potential and talents. Public school principals, teachers and educational support staff are the needs of students with disabilities. Go further to make sure that is met, which must be supported by the government to properly fund public schools.

“We urge the federal government to immediately address the funding inequality of public students with disabilities by ensuring that at least 100% of SRS is provided to all schools.
