Fisheries Minister Don Panch is in trouble as review of demersal fisheries goes into full swing again

Asked for comment from the minister’s office, a spokesman for the state government vigorously defended the measures as essential to protecting fish stocks.

“The Washington state government took a very important step this year by introducing new measures to protect the state’s iconic demersal stock for future generations,” said a spokeswoman.

“The decision was based on a scientific assessment of the fish stock, in line with recommendations from the stakeholder-led Harvest Strategy Working Group, and following extensive consultation with industry and stakeholders. ”

Just last week, opposition fisheries spokesman Colin de Grussa accused the government of throwing fish charters aside and labeled the new fish management deal “outrageous.”

We have reached out to plaintiffs Matthew Kennedy, Hall and Wilcox for comment.
