BBL: Somerset captain Tom Abel joins Brisbane Heat

Brisbane Heat has secured the services of Somerset Captain Tom Abel for the 2021-22 BBL season.

The 27-year-old British batter was Heat’s third international signature and joined fellow Ben Duckett and Afghan spinner Musib Ul Rahman.

Abel fills the import space left by county teammate Tom Banton, who opposed respecting the heat deal last month.

Abel’s qualification was supported by former Bulls captain Darren Lehmann, current Middlesex coach Stuart Law and Heat’s assistant coach.

Abel, who led Somerset to the final of the Vitality Blast T20 Tournament last month, said:

Heat coach Wade Seccombe was determined that Abel would “really fit” the Brisbane club.

“Darren is back from his role as a coach for The 100’s Northern Superchargers. He had nothing but good to report, and Stewie Law was a good teamman. He was also a leader, elastic, talented and hungry, and I highly recommended him as a player, “said Seccombe.

“Tom has been working hard to improve the T20 game and has certainly blossomed in the last few seasons.

“He played hockey at a high level when he was young, and the folds are a bit unusual, so he will certainly play our part.”

Heat will open the season against Sydney Thunder on December 6th at Manuka Oval.
