Wiretap with firearms expert used as evidence against man accused of murdering missing camper

Prosecutors will rely on wiretapping and firearms experts while trying to prove that a pilot killed two campers in the Victorian Alps, the court heard.

Gregory Lynn, 55, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday after pleading not guilty to the murder of two campers at a remote high-altitude campsite in March 2020.

Police claim an airline pilot killed Russell Hill and Carol Clay while camping in the Wonangatta Valley.

The pair went missing in the Victorian High Country on March 20, 2020, and were declared missing days later when their campsite was found on fire.

Their bodies were found near Dargo last November, just days after Lynn was charged with murder.

He was arrested at a remote campsite at Arbuckle Junction in Gippsland.

On Monday, the court said the royal family will prove their claims based on phone records, transcripts of “ongoing” interviews, intercepted calls and digital surveillance material.

Mr. Lin’s attorney, Dermot Dunn QC, told the court that he has 14 folders containing materials needed for the January hearing.

He told the court he was still waiting for some good material to be provided before he was ready to proceed with the proceedings, but was confident it would be provided.

The court heard that four witnesses, including ballistics expert Paul Griffiths and forensic officer Mark Geratry, would be called to testify at the hearing.

Court Prosecutor John Dickie reminded the court that Mr. Griffiths will be unable to attend for four days of hearings, suggesting a firearms expert may appear another day.

The court ruled that his evidence was material to the case, especially regarding “bullet trajectories.”

Justice Brett Sonnett told both parties that the summary of evidence, including Mr. Lynn’s handwritten affidavit, was only 733 pages.

He aired that he had a “very high hope” for all witnesses and parties to attend the hearing in person in January, citing previous issues with audiovisual connections in court.

“I prefer to have this matter in court,” said Magistrate Sonnet.

“This is an important case.”

The seemingly random murder of two campers has attracted intense media scrutiny after hearing that 12 journalists had filed documents related to the charges.

Mr. Lin was excused from appearing in court on Monday. He is being held on remand and has not applied for bail.

The matter will return to court on January 16 for a four-day hearing.
