Letters and Short Takes 4 July 2023 | Newcastle Herald

I was very pleased with your letter to John Eure about your banking (“Cash of Precious Memories”, Letters, 24/6). I worked at the Commonwealth Bank on the corner of Hunter and Newcomen Streets in his 1960s and attended the weekly exchanges in his first-floor stateroom at the Commercial Bank. Short but always fun and friendly meetings. I also remember the incredibly hard work of collecting large sums of cash and preparing for the industry’s big cash payday in a locked and encrypted room upstairs. Yes, we had guns too. Later, when working at the Stockton branch, twice a year he went to the rifle range for shooting practice. Ah, the good old days. And it was always Newcastle. It’s not ridiculous. Rest in peace, John, wonderful memories.
