LGBTQ protesters surrounded by Mark Latham supporters in violent confrontation

Police have charged two people after a standoff between some 500 supporters of One Nation NSW leader Mark Latham and LGBTQ protesters in southwest Sydney.

Footage shows a large group of mostly men confronting about 15 LGBTQ protesters outside St. Michael’s Church in Belfield, where Latham was scheduled to address on Tuesday night.

Riot police were called in and surrounded the protesters to protect them. Protesters from the Community Action Group for Rainbow Lights said they went to the church to protest peacefully before the incident turned violent.

Footage from the event shows one protester being pushed to the ground and a large group surrounding him.

Officers from Campsie Police Area Command were called to the church around 5 p.m. and upon arrival, numerous glass bottles and other projectiles were hurled at them, police said.

A male constable was hit by a projectile and allegedly injured his hand. He was taken to Canterbury Hospital in stable condition.
