AIIA urges government to prioritize ICT worker visas

The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) has urged the federal government to prioritize ICT expert visas as the country reopens its borders to fully vaccinated visa holders.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that fully vaccinated visa holders, including skilled workers, will be allowed to enter Australia from December 1st without applying for an exemption.

AIIA CEO Ron Gauci has called on the government to prioritize tech worker visas, and the sector is working to improve local capabilities by increasing its talent pipeline.

“We are striving to expand our skill base locally, but we need access to certain advanced skills and people in demand from abroad where the local market cannot supply them. From cybersecurity to application development. Up to that point, data and analytics have been identified by AIIA as a major demand area, “he said.

“Australia’s economic recovery can be driven by innovation and investment in technology. The government is working on Australia’s digital skills, supporting digital transformation and providing a skilled workforce to support economic growth. And we must continue to strive to protect our digital sovereignty. “

According to an AIIA survey on the Australian ICT industry, 73% of companies expect to grow and hire aggressively this year, and 65% are considering hiring staff with cybersecurity skills. 60% want cloud skills.
