Over 40 flights canceled and departures delayed as extreme winds hit Sydney airport again

Strong winds for the second week in a row have limited the number of runways at the country’s busiest airport, further exacerbating travel disruptions.

More than 40 domestic flights to and from Sydney were canceled on Sunday, with dozens more delayed.

A spokeswoman for Sydney Airport confirmed that it had moved to single runway operations on the advice of Australian Air Services.

“While the impact is minimal, some flights have been delayed or canceled,” he said in a statement.

“Passengers should contact the airline to obtain the latest information on the flight status.”

A shortage of air traffic control staff in Brisbane airspace is known to cause additional delays for passengers.

Sydney Airport normally operates two north-south runways, but crosswinds shift it to one east-west runway.

More than 100 domestic flights were canceled at Sydney airport last weekend after pilots were limited to one runway due to windstorms.

The cancellations caused massive backorders and huge crowds formed at the airport’s domestic terminal as school holidays began in New South Wales.
