A panel van where a prototype of the long wheelbase Suzuki Jimny was discovered?

Suzuki has found a test drive of its very favorable long wheelbase version. Jimny The mini SUV may indicate that a larger version is under development. Not sure if it’s a 5-door vehicle, remains a 3-door vehicle, or has room for both?

The spy shot shows a camouflaged prototype driving on the streets of Austria. There seems to be no evidence of a rear door, but for purely testing purposes, the prototype may be chopped up in unusual ways to ward off spectators.

However, it opens up the possibility for Suzuki to plan a panel van style proposal. The backseat is the same as the existing model, except for the open boot space. At the moment, Jimny provides a little trunk space when the backseat is up, but when the backseat is folded flat, the volume increases from 75L to 830L. Expanding the wheelbase can increase the space to over 200L / 1000L.

Even if five doors are planned, you can expect similar benefits in terms of boot space. Obviously, it provides easier access to the backseats and makes it more practical. Another possibility is that there is no backseat in either the 5-door or 3-door configuration that would push Jimny into the space of a commercial vehicle.

Speaking of commercial vehicles, there were some rumors deep in the world of forums and social media comments that Suzuki might introduce a pickup / ute version. Such models are undoubtedly based on this long wheelbase platform with two seats. Imagine a dual cab version of the 5-seat.

At this stage, there are no details about the powertrains of these proposed new variants, but the 75kW and 130Nm 1.5-liter 4-cylinders of the current model may suffice. Suzuki is also installing a 1.0-liter turbo gasoline 3-cylinder in the toolbox and is developing 82kW and 160Nm with the current Swift. This may be a good option for heavier and longer wheelbase platforms. Time will tell.
