A man who slapped French President Emmanuel Macron during a public event was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but with a suspended sentence of 14 months.

BFMTV, a television station, reported that a 28-year-old woman was also banned from public office and possession of weapons by a court in Valence.

Damian T slapped the 43-year-old president on Tuesday when he visited Tain-l’Hermitage in southern Lyon.

The incident captured by the camera caused astonishment all over the country.

According to television stations, the 28-year-old boy did not deny the act in court and said he was an unjust victim.

Macron represented the decline of France, and the broadcaster said the man said.

Earlier, he said he was also thinking of throwing eggs and pies.

Macron spoke of the incident in a television interview Thursday, emphasizing that it was an “isolated act.”

He went on to talk about violence against women, for example, commenting on how “a very tense moment in our country” was during the “Yellow Vest” protest.

About a year before the national elections, and within two weeks of the local elections, Macron toured the country to meet voters.
