Three passengers on a German local train overwhelmed an Iraqi-born man who injured five with a knife, officials said.
According to the DPA news agency, the train was running near the western city of Aachen when the man began to attack fellow passengers “randomly and arbitrarily”, said Herbert Leul, Minister of Interior. Said.
The motive for the attack was under investigation.
Authorities were investigating possible motives for the militants, but did not confirm it, Reul said.
Police said the injured were being treated at a local hospital and no hospital was in a life-threatening condition.
Reul said there were about 270 passengers on the train.
According to state police, a police officer who happened to be among the passengers overwhelmed the 31-year-old suspect with the help of two other passengers.
The suspect was known to the authorities, Reul said.
He described the attack as “a horrific crime stopped by enormous courage.”
