There aren’t many SUVs on the market that are as practical as this. Land Rover engineers seem to be told to install as many shelves and storage options as physically possible. There are full-width shelves running across the dash, including behind the main touch screen. And it’s also rubber-lined, so whatever you put there will stay there. The floating center console includes a multi-sized cup holder with grip, a deep tray, and a large center box underneath the foldable armrests. Sitting in front reminds me of the Land Rover Range Rover model. You get its raised, majestic, imperative seating position and can look down on all your servants … other drivers. Despite reasonably acceptable consumption (due to its weight), the D300 also works fine between overtaking and full acceleration. Using a regular Vbox Sport and driveway, I recorded the highest 0-100km / h in 7.16 seconds. This is shy about Land Rover’s (usually optimistic) time of 7.0 seconds.

What we like most about this engine is its smoothness and its comfortable nature. It’s fun to spin a little when you hit the throttle, but you can still run in the background while pulling like a train. You have a huge reserve of torque just to get this feeling and just waiting to be utilized. While cruising long, steep hills, the Defender rushes in a fuss. And because it is an in-line 6-cylinder engine, it produces a very nice sound for diesel. Throughout most of the rev range, it actually sounds like petrol, but only with a hint of diesel rattling at a particular point, or if the engine is still cold.

The ride quality of the air suspension package is truly sublime. In the city, dangerous road connections and changing surfaces are resolved without any unpleasant or rattling noise, and 255/60 tires provide ample sidewall absorption. Perhaps the downside of this is the obvious body roll. It upsets more than some other crossover style SUVs on the market, especially compared to most of the ones from German manufacturers. It feels pretty confident and comfortable on fast-paced country roads. In fact, it doesn’t feel as strange as you might think on a narrow mountain road. But there are only a handful of faster sweep bends.

Of course, the advantage of this is off-road performance. And, with the exception of perhaps one of those G-class wagons from Mercedes, German SUVs never get closer to being able to do this. Very short front and rear overhangs provide excellent approach and departure angles of 37.5 and 40 degrees.

At that time, the standard air suspension system is pulled up to the highest mode. This mode also provides a large clearance from the ground. Actually it is 291 mm.
